Many people with low vitamin D have no obvious symptoms, while tiredness and body aches can come from sleep problems, iron deficiency, thyroid disorders and several other conditions. The useful next step is to look at your risk factors and decide with a healthcare professional whether testing is needed.
What is vitamin D and why is it important?
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that the body can make when skin is exposed to ultraviolet B light. It can also come from food and supplements. The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements explains that vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and supports normal bone, muscle, nerve and immune function.
Bone health: Vitamin D helps maintain calcium and phosphate levels needed for normal bone mineralisation.
Muscle function: Adequate vitamin D supports normal muscle function, although taking extra does not automatically improve strength.
Immune function: Vitamin D is involved in normal immune activity, but supplements do not prevent every infection.

What is vitamin D deficiency?
Vitamin D deficiency means the body has too little vitamin D to support normal function. Severe or prolonged deficiency can impair bone mineralisation, causing rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. It can also contribute to secondary hyperparathyroidism as the body tries to keep blood calcium stable. There is no single threshold that every organisation uses in every clinical situation. The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements notes that the risk of deficiency rises when serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D is below 30 nmol/L, or 12 ng/mL, while levels of 50 nmol/L, or 20 ng/mL, or more are adequate for most people. How is vitamin D deficiency treated?
Treatment depends on how low the level is, why it became low and whether another condition is involved. A clinician may recommend a daily or short-term higher-dose vitamin D regimen, followed by maintenance intake. Vitamin D3 often raises 25-hydroxyvitamin D more effectively than vitamin D2, but the correct product and dose depend on the individual.
Do not copy a high-dose schedule from the internet. Vitamin D is fat-soluble, and excessive intake can cause hypercalcaemia, nausea, weakness, kidney stones and other serious problems. Follow-up testing may be needed after treatment, particularly when the deficiency was severe or absorption is impaired.
