Protein powder is the supplement most gym-goers reach for first, and one of the most common triggers of a grumbling stomach.

The trouble with protein powder and digestion is rarely the protein itself. The material around it usually is.

Whey concentrate is roughly 70 to 80 percent protein by weight, and the rest is residual lactose, milk fat, and minerals. For a lactose-intolerant adult, a single 30 g scoop can carry 3 to 6 g of lactose, enough to bring on bloating, gas, and loose stools. Whey concentrate, isolate, or plant: which sits easier?

The three whey forms are the same protein at different filtration stages. Each step strips out more lactose and fat, and each costs more. How do you read a protein powder label?

Front-of-pack claims are built to sell. Flip the tub and read in this order.

Start with protein per serving against serving size. "25 g protein" on a 40 g scoop is honest; the same figure on a 60 g scoop means the rest is filler, often maltodextrin or creamer powder. Next, watch for amino spiking, where cheap free-form aminos like glycine and taurine pad the protein number and flatter a nitrogen test without adding real protein. If they sit high on the ingredient list, treat the headline number with suspicion.

Proprietary blends are another flag. A label listing "Performance Blend: 3,200 mg" without a per-ingredient breakdown hides the real dose inside. Two regulators set the backstop for what labels may say. Work through these before you switch brands.

  1. Halve the dose for three days. If symptoms ease, load was the issue, not the powder. Build back up over a week.

  2. Change the carrier. Mix with water instead of milk, or try a lactose-free or plant milk for two days.

  3. Check the ingredient list against your triggers: sorbitol, inulin, chicory root, and carrageenan are the usual suspects.

  4. Move the shake away from training. Protein sits harder mid-workout than 60 to 90 minutes either side.
