You can blame a late night for a day or two. But when you are sleeping reasonably well and still feel drained, it is worth looking beyond coffee. The useful question is not, “Which vitamin gives me energy?” It is, “Why am I tired, and what evidence would show the cause?”
Why vitamins and minerals matter for energy
Food supplies energy, while vitamins and minerals help the body release and use it, produce healthy blood cells and support nerves and muscles. Important roles include:
Cellular energy metabolism: Several B vitamins help enzymes release energy from food.
Oxygen transport: Iron is needed to make haemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood.
Nerve and muscle function: Vitamin B12 and magnesium support normal nervous-system and muscle function.
Red blood-cell formation: Vitamin B12, folate and iron are all involved in producing healthy red blood cells.
Can vitamin and mineral deficiencies really cause fatigue?
Yes, but fatigue is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. The NHS and the National Institutes of Health describe tiredness or weakness among the possible features of several deficiencies. The same symptoms can also occur with sleep apnoea, thyroid disease, diabetes, depression, infection and many other conditions. Blood tests and a medical history help separate these possibilities.
Common vitamin and mineral deficiencies linked with fatigue
Vitamin B12 deficiency
Vitamin B12 is needed for normal red blood-cell formation and nervous-system function. Deficiency can cause fatigue, weakness, pins and needles, balance problems, memory changes or a sore tongue. Neurological symptoms can occur even when anaemia is not obvious.
Risk is higher in people following vegan diets without reliable fortified foods or supplements, older adults, and people with pernicious anaemia, coeliac disease, Crohn’s disease or previous stomach or intestinal surgery.
Food sources include meat, fish, eggs, dairy and fortified foods.
Vitamin D deficiency
Vitamin D supports normal bone and muscle function. Deficiency may be associated with muscle weakness, aches or fatigue, although many people have no obvious symptoms. Risk can be higher with limited sun exposure, darker skin, covering most of the skin, malabsorption or certain medical conditions. A blood test is needed when deficiency is suspected.
Food sources are limited and include oily fish, egg yolk and fortified foods. Supplements should follow individual advice and the product label.
Iron deficiency
Iron is needed to make haemoglobin. Once iron deficiency progresses to anaemia, reduced oxygen-carrying capacity can cause fatigue, breathlessness, headaches and reduced exercise tolerance. Some people report symptoms before anaemia develops, but testing is needed to confirm the cause.
Iron deficiency is less common in adult men than in menstruating women. The British Society of Gastroenterology recommends investigating confirmed iron-deficiency anaemia in men because gastrointestinal blood loss or another underlying condition may be responsible. Do not start iron simply because you feel tired.
Folate deficiency
Folate is required for normal red blood-cell production. Deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anaemia, which may cause tiredness, weakness or breathlessness. Causes include low intake, alcohol misuse, malabsorption, increased requirements and some medicines.
Food sources include dark green vegetables, beans, peas, peanuts, fruit and fortified foods.
Magnesium deficiency
Magnesium is involved in normal muscle, nerve and energy metabolism. A true deficiency can cause weakness, fatigue, cramps or abnormal heart rhythms, but it is a less common explanation for persistent tiredness than iron, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency. Risk rises with certain gastrointestinal conditions, long-term alcohol misuse, poorly controlled diabetes and some medicines.
Food sources include nuts, seeds, pulses, whole grains and leafy green vegetables.
What about zinc?
Zinc supports immune function, wound healing and protein synthesis. Deficiency can affect appetite, taste, wound healing and immunity, but the evidence linking mild zinc deficiency with everyday fatigue is less direct. Do not use zinc as a general energy supplement without a reason.
These vitamin and mineral deficiencies can produce overlapping symptoms, so tiredness alone cannot identify which nutrient is low.
